International Sikh Turban Day April 13th
|
Why I wear a Turban
During the recent years, the turban has been questioned, roundly criticized and has
come under attack from various quarters. This has happened from within the Sikh
community and also from other communities, governments, religious groups and other
organizations.
These include:
- The French ban on turbans in public schools.
- Attacks on Sikhs following the 9/11 attacks. We are mistaken for Muslims!
- General low esteem among turban users due to vanity, ridicule and taunting from
others.
- General perception is that the majority of our girls prefer clean-shaven Sikhs.
- Job opportunities affected by turban users.
- Sikhs with turbans are termed medieval and archaic.
- Sikhs arriving in foreign lands removing their turbans at the 1st opportunity
International Sikh Turban day was first started by Sikh Children Forum in 2003 and first
"Sikh Turban Day" was celebrated on 13 April 2004 in California and Amritsar. From 13
April 2005, other organizations and Sikh centers around the globe joined and started
celebrating this event.
